How Measur is doing in the middle of covid-19 crisis?

Measur offers laboratory analyses, testing services and material characterization. Simply put, whenever someone is developing stuff, we make sure they are developing it in the right direction. We also test product performance, product safety and make sure the goods are effective in their intended use.

Before covid-19 most of our clients were developing new products, such as materials or technologies, and needed our help to determine certain properties of their product. With our help, they made the next iteration to see if the changes in their process made the product properties better.

Simply put, whenever someone is developing stuff, we make sure they are developing it in the right direction.

At the beginning of April 2020, as the infection rates were following exponential growth in many countries, there was a global shortage of personal protective equipment (PPE), such as face masks, respirators and protective face shields (visors) in the market. This resulted in many new dealers enter the PPE market, with many importing the PPE from new manufacturers in foreign countries, without knowing the product quality.

It quickly became clear that many of the new PPE products, despite having official-looking certificates and other documents, did not really protect the wearer or others as promised, and did therefore not fulfill the requirements of the EU regulations, despite having a CE marking on them.

We started receiving an increasing number of requests to test the performance requirements of face masks, respirator masks and visors. As we had not done exactly these measurements before, we first took a few days to study the EU regulations for PPE and medical devices. Next, we determined the best accredited European laboratories in terms of turnaround time, price and our own validation methods. Within a week we had launched testing services for face masks and visors, and in two weeks for respirator masks. Surgical gowns and gloves followed soon after.

Within a week we had launched testing services for face masks and visors, and in two weeks for respirator masks.

We contacted several Finnish authorities so that they would circulate the word that these types of services are now available, and they did. We’ve been receiving inbounds from Finnish governmental agencies, ministries and other laboratories. And that only makes sense, as to our best knowledge, for a long time we were the only Finnish company offering accredited testing services for the PPE.

By the end of May 2020, we had tested the performance for tens of different PPE importers and manufacturers. We’ve received feedback, that we’ve been faster and cheaper than any other laboratory that our customers have tried. We’ve made the measurements required by the EU regulations for many new Finnish PPE manufacturers so that they can CE mark their products.

Due to increased demand for PPE testing, our efforts for other testing services and surprisingly quick recovery of demand in material and chemical analysis requests, we’ve been able to make revenue records month after month, despite these difficult times we live in.
